 A brief history

As the name suggests, Pretty Vacant was established in 2004 to explore the parallel between music and fashion by two former Camden Market traders.

The brand relocated to the calmer waters of Brighton where husband and wife team, Simon and Mhorag, focussed the handwriting of the brand from the 40's through to the 70's. Many of the silhouettes you see in the collections today are inspired by hours of hitting the pavements seeking out vintage garments from a variety of thrift stores. The garments are then brought back to the creative hub of our studio in Hove where we design and upcycle with the help of our in- house pattern cutter and garment tech to create unique and contemporary garments with the perfect fit. All prints on our garments have been lovingly created by us.

 

Environemental Policy

We are very proud to be certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard or GOTS and Soil Association

This means we have been audited by GOTS for ethical production, organic and sustainable cotton fabrics and a duty of care to all  employees including workers rights. 

To carry GOTS accreditation, every part of the supply chain will have been audited to meet their stringent standards, from the supply and dying of the cotton through to the last point of production. This gives the wearer absolute assurance that there is no part of the chain which does not meet this criteria.

We produce all of our product through a family run factory in India. The owner is a partner in Pretty Vacant and they too have had their factory audited by GOTS. We are confident that we have done as much as a small company can do to ensure that we are producing ethical and sustainable products. There will always be more, but we take our responsibilty in turning back the environmental time bomb clock extremely seriously and will continue to do our very best to mitigate our contribution.
